In my lab, we focus on two distinct research topics.
Tissue engineering is one of the strategies using in regenerative medicine. Many tissue engineered studies combine cells, biomaterials and growth factors to generate engineered tissue to repair or replace the damaged one. The design of engineered tissues is to reach promotion of angiogenesis and cell differentiation for neo-tissue regeneration. Our lab incorporates adult stem cells and biomaterials to design 3D customized tissue constructs for different tissue regeneration (Fig. 1). Our goal in tissue regeneration spans from the regeneration of hard tissues such as bone and cartilage, to soft tissues like adipose, lymphatic tissue, and hair.
Lymphedema is the abnormal accumulation of excess lymph remained as tissue fluid in the interstitial space resulting from the obstruction of lymph drainage. Lymphedema can be categorized as primary and secondary lymphedema. Primary lymphedema is the abnormal development of lymph system, mostly is congenital. Secondary lymphedema is the damage of the lymph system resulting from infection, cancer or radiation. After lymph nodes removal and radiation treatments on breast cancer or gynecological cancer patients, roughly up to 40% of breast cancer patients and 20-49 % gynecological cancer patients have complications on failure of lymph drainage causing the development of lymphedema. There is very little information regarding how the lymphedema symptoms have been induced during the development of lymphedema. Furthermore, how to treat or prevent the development of lymphedema is also important for future clinical application. In our lab, we study the mechanism of the lymphedema and find the feasible approaches for lymphedema treatment (Fig.2).
