慢性腎臟疾病是一個全球性的健康問題,也是高齡化社會公共衛生支出的巨大負擔與隱憂。在台灣因腎臟衰竭須接受洗腎的人口居高不下,所耗費的醫療資源更佔健保支出之冠。

慢性腎衰的重要特徵之一是腎小管間質纖維化,病理表現是間質中產生過量的細胞外基質,及腎小管上皮細胞的萎縮,進而導致腎臟功能逐漸喪失。對於間質纖維化的詳盡機制細胞外基質物理化學性質的變化、及基質變化如何影響細胞特性的改變、又或是細胞在疾病發展過程中,如何應對不同種細胞間交互的改變等,一直是腎臟纖維化過程中尚未釐清的課題。而其中最根本的問題是:纖維化本身是否可逆? 什麼程度可逆、可清除、又或是可被停止? 而什麼情況下,則會導致不可逆、又或是造成更全面性的影響? 我們藉由細胞及動物實驗模式的建立,希望能更全面了解慢性腎臟疾病發展的過程與機制。希望隊學術知識奠定更多基礎,更宏觀的視野外,也期待對藥物的發展,台灣社會經濟有長遠的建樹。
